The History and Science Behind the JLMH Paint Restoration

This winter, the Joel Lane Museum House has undertaken a major restoration of the exterior paint on all three of our historical buildings. What began as a simple re-painting was complicated by the discovery of damage beneath the paint, which led to a modern study of the paint’s history… and finally to a radically different look for the Lane House. Join JLMH Director Lanie Hubbard for a lively exploration that spans the beginnings of Raleigh’s history, the evolution of preservation science, and the newest discoveries about Raleigh’s oldest house. A little bit of old-school archaeological digging, a little bit of newfangled CSI-style forensic analysis, and a little bit of historical interpretation add up to a brand new (and very old!) color palate.

A native of Arizona, Lanie Hubbard was originally trained in Literature, with an MA from the University of Tulsa. She has a heart for stories, and for historical research. She joined the Joel Lane Museum House staff as a part-time staff docent in 2014, and delighted in telling the stories of Raleigh’s earliest history, Joel Lane, and the community of backcountry 18th-century North Carolina. Lanie became the Director of JLMH in the summer of 2017. She continues to delight in research, new discoveries, and in finding new ways to share the stories of Raleigh’s history with the museum’s guests.

What visitors say

Thank you for the excellent tour of the Joel Lane House.  I learned a lot about the history of Raleigh as well as the Joel Lane House.  I learned how harsh conditions were back then and how we take for granted things they did not have back then.  The structure of houses has really changed a lot since the Joel Lane House was built.
